John B. Breaux papers, 1933, 1938, 1963, 1970-2004 (bulk 1987-2004).

The U.S. Senate Files (1938, 1963, 1970-2004) is the largest subgroup, containing all materials related to Breaux's tenure in the U.S. Senate from 1987 to 2004. These files document his dealings with fellow senators and representatives, meetings of the commissions and committees on which he served, voting records within the Senate, research materials on issues with which he was concerned, and Democratic Party activities. The files kept by Breaux's legislative staff are included here, especially those of Projects Director Johnny Broussard. The subgroup also contains press materials, which include a photographic collection of Breaux's period in office. The Political Files (1976-2003) subgroup relates to Breaux's re-election campaigns for both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. It includes campaign strategy materials, talking points, biographical and political histories of opponents, and promotional materials such as bumper stickers and fliers. Also included are materials documenting his leadership positions in the Democratic Party and participation in the Democratic Leadership Council. The Social Files (1975-2001) subgroup is divided into two series: Mardi Gras and Memorabilia. The Mardi Gras series contains information related to the annual Washington Mardi Gras balls from 1989 to 1999, including Mardi Gras programs featuring Louisiana festival queens, princesses, and the kings and queens of the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians. The U.S. House of Representatives Files (ca. 1972-1987) subgroup contains all of the legislative files relating to Breaux's 14 years in the House of Representatives. Materials are indexed in a per-box content list, but are otherwise not included in any subject database or preserved beyond what was immediately necessary. Some House materials may be included in the U.S. Senate Files if they pertain to issues in which Breaux was engaged in both offices. This was done in accordance with the filing practices of Senator Breaux's legislative staff and was not an attempt to link materials by subject.
